    So much I loved about this video, such a cool interview. My favorite moment is when Clay says: "I still think a lot of times, people underestimate the power of a song." To me, the song is everything...it's the currency of the industry...and I want to print money.

    Sorry but this is just not right, generic songs are pop songs, country is more specific with lts lyrics, any song that has a story isnt generic because its about someone or aomething

    • @SongTownUSA
      @SongTownUSA День назад

      Absolutely, generic is never a great goal. Marty is a well-known country songwriter. His hits have plenty of detail. He's talking about writing more universally not generically. :)

    I give them one song and tell them if they get that one in Billboard's top 40 I'll sign over 2 songs the next time and see how that goes. Plus if the publisher has never had a song get in Billboard's Top 40 you're wasting songs with them because most are song hoarders and sit on them. I've outright sold some songs for 5,000 dollars each and they have both writers and publishers rights. I'll do that before I'll let them sit on 30 songs that I can't do anything with anymore.

  • @judegraham463
    @judegraham463 2 дня назад

    that example Marty mentioned about the guy who was holding onto those ten songs so defiantly tells me how much emotional investment we can put into our songs, which may be a great subject in how it can not only help us but also hinder us from being creative.P.S. I've got a habit of commenting directly after a point has been made without waiting to see if it gets addressed at some point further on. So please excuse my impulsivity, though I will leave my comment but just to let you know. (there's a self mocking/knowing wry smile on my face as I write)

    such great advise, and the argument about how to redirect those feelings of frustration in to music and create something positive from it, and that may help to move someone in deep ways, not by being angry but just by , well, being positive. There is probably no better medium than music that can turn negative emotions into positive ones.

    One of my first mentors (through another group) told me I needed to look at writing out, not writing up. I was confused at first, frustrated, felt like I just got hockey checked into the penalty box, etc. He basically explained "you all need to come up together." As I struggled through my first year of writing (on my own) and understanding the business, it became very clear that "there is no golden ticket." This was going to be a lot of hard work and its gonna take time. I've made some good peer connections since then and have a great co-writer with whom I write most of the time - we are at very similar places in our journey. Can't wait to become that overnight success.....10 years from now.

    My thoughts on the song 'Work'. I think a lot more people than Jenny might imagine can relate to the sentiment of this lyric. Really I think its quiet profound commenting beyond the importance of a marriage and what is needed to maintain it, namely attention, but also to the wider thoughts around 'work' and who is really gaining, benefiting from the time we are being committed into work. thats all OK if you are getting more satisfaction than misery from your work, but if you're working in a Factory Line or even a professional job such as a Solicitor whose task it is to be confrontational and mean and deceitful (no malice intended but just an example), then you may well find the 60-80 hours you're expected to work for the firm every week is just a bit much. So I think more people from a much wider socio-economic demographic than you at first imagine could relate to such a song.

    Couldn't "writing down" be a little like playing music with someone who's not at your level? Meaning, everyone has something to offer, something different, that might be helpful - not Federer/Marty different levels, but for me at least, I have had fun playing with others who aren't at my level (TBC not all that high either!) and have learned and grown from either something they shared or from showing them stuff which helped me gain more confidence and feel good about helping. I feel I need more practice at co-writing in general to prepare for any "writing up" opportunities. All that said, wanna cowrite? ;-)

      Great points. I think we have the most fun and get the best results most of when we are writing with others we respect and appreciate. Clay, when you tell your Sara Davis story, you never mention the person who came up with the hook, produced the record, and probably came up with a lot of the melody. I forget his name right now, but Sara did mention him in an interview on SongTown. To be fair, he was the one writing down.

    • @SongTownUSA
      @SongTownUSA 8 дней назад

      Gayle had a publishing/development record deal at that point. So, I wouldn’t say that Dave Pittenger was writing down. Most staff writers want to write with signed artists and other staffwriters. That's a smart strategy. My story was about how Sara and Gayle met and moved up together. Starting at ground zero. We have a full interview with Sara on the SongTown website you can watch with more details than I could cover in this short discussion. Also Sara and Gayle are both great melody writers. I couldn’t assume who came up with what. Also, abcdefu was produced by Pete Nappi . He was not a writer on the tune. :) -CM
